Edinburgh has two event calendars: August, and the rest of the year. During the Fringe the city carries thousands of shows across hundreds of rooms; outside it, the Usher Hall, the Traverse and the Queen's Hall keep a quieter but genuinely strong programme running.
Which Edinburgh listings are worth checking?
For August, the festival sites are non-negotiable - the Fringe, the International Festival, the Book Festival and the Art Festival each run separate programmes and separate ticketing, and no general listings site merges them properly. Start there, not with a "what's on in Edinburgh" roundup.
The rest of the year is where the venue sites earn their place. The Traverse for new writing, the Lyceum for classic theatre, Summerhall for the odder end of everything, Sneaky Pete's and the Caves for club nights, the Usher Hall and the Queen's Hall for concerts. The National Museum of Scotland and the Scottish National Gallery both run talks and lates that never make the tourist guides.
